The proposed law is being called the H-1B Visa Abuse Elimination Act of 2026. According to this proposed law, a 3-year ban will be imposed on new H-1B visas, the annual quota is proposed to be reduced from 65,000 to 25,000, while the selection system will be based only on high salary instead of lottery. The law proposes to set a minimum annual salary of $200,000, ban the recruitment system through foreign companies, and also eliminate employment permission for the families of H-4 visa holders.
The proposed bill also includes a proposal to eliminate the optional practical training system for foreign students, which is currently considered an important means of working in the United States after education, and there is also talk of closing the path to permanent residence, i.e., a green card.
The proposed law has come from a political group that is considered to be in favor of strict immigration policies, according to this group, which believes that foreign students and workers are putting pressure on local citizens’ jobs and wages.
