WhatsApp has rolled out a powerful new security feature designed to better protect user accounts from online threats, including spyware and other cyberattacks.
The feature, named Strict Account Settings, automatically applies the highest level of privacy and security controls to a user’s account. According to WhatsApp, this mode is intended for individuals who face a higher risk of digital attacks. Once activated, the system blocks files, attachments, and media sent from unknown numbers, significantly reducing the chances of malicious content reaching the user.
WhatsApp stated that the feature has been developed with journalists, public figures, social media influencers, and public representatives in mind, as these groups are frequently targeted by hackers. When Strict Account Settings is enabled, the account enters a secure lockdown mode, limiting certain functions to strengthen overall protection.
Users can activate this option by navigating to Settings > Privacy > Advanced Settings within the app. The company confirmed that the feature is being introduced in phases and will be available to all users in the coming weeks. In addition, WhatsApp is upgrading its core infrastructure to further enhance platform security.
To improve the protection of photos, videos, and messages, WhatsApp has also begun adopting the modern Rust programming language. Rust is known for its memory-safe design and is being integrated alongside the existing C++ media library. The company revealed that around 160,000 lines of C++ code have been replaced with approximately 90,000 lines of Rust, leading to reduced memory usage and improved app performance overall.
