Faisalabad (NYToday) — A rare and shocking medical case has emerged from the Indian state of Gujarat, where doctors successfully removed nearly 250 live lice and around 85 eggs from a woman’s eyelashes.
According to reports, 66-year-old Gitaben, a resident of Surat, had been suffering from intense itching, swelling, and persistent eye pain for almost one and a half months. Her eyes remained constantly red, and the discomfort became so severe that it disrupted her sleep.
Eventually, Gitaben sought medical help at the eye department of Savarkandla Hospital in Amreli district. She was examined by ophthalmologist Dr. Murganak Patel, who made a startling discovery during the check-up. Instead of a minor infection, doctors found hundreds of live lice and numerous eggs attached to her eyelids and eyelashes.
Medical experts explained that lice are highly sensitive to light, and due to the delicate nature of the affected area, treatment had to be carried out with extreme caution. Using specialised tools and without administering injections, doctors carefully began the removal process.
The procedure lasted nearly two hours, during which all the lice and eggs were successfully extracted. Following the treatment, the woman’s condition improved significantly, bringing relief from pain, itching, and swelling. Doctors later described the case as extremely rare and advised maintaining proper hygiene and seeking immediate medical attention if unusual eye symptoms persist.
