The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has issued a deeply concerning report highlighting the deteriorating human rights situation in Afghanistan under the rule of the Afghan Taliban.

According to the report, serious violations of fundamental human rights continue across the country, with growing state repression and severe limits on public freedoms. Restrictions on independent media and free expression remain firmly in place, and the situation has worsened in recent months. Journalists reportedly face intimidation, detention, and censorship, significantly limiting public access to reliable information and open debate.

The report also disputes the Taliban’s repeated claims of granting a general amnesty. UNAMA notes that former government officials and members of the previous security forces continue to face harassment, arbitrary detention, and, in some cases, reprisals, which contradict official assurances.

On women’s rights, the report says the Taliban have further tightened restrictions on women and girls. Barriers to education, employment, and freedom of movement remain widespread, severely affecting women’s participation in public life and damaging the country’s social and economic development.

UNAMA further highlights concerns about the justice system, stating that legal institutions remain largely ineffective and that harsh interpretations of criminal laws are being enforced without due process. Human rights observers warn that the lack of an independent judiciary has left many Afghans without access to fair trials or legal protection.

Experts emphasised that the Taliban authorities must distance themselves from extremist networks and prioritise rebuilding Afghanistan’s fragile economy. They stressed the need to restore basic rights, reopen educational opportunities, strengthen healthcare services, and create employment in order to ease the worsening humanitarian crisis and provide hope to the Afghan people.

The report calls on the international community to continue monitoring the situation closely and to support initiatives that protect civilians, defend human rights, and encourage constructive engagement aimed at improving conditions across Afghanistan.
