Islamabad: A devastating suicide blast during Friday prayers at an Imambargah in Islamabad’s Tarlai area has killed at least 31 worshippers and left more than 150 others injured, officials confirmed. Several of the wounded remain in critical condition, and authorities fear the death toll could rise further.
According to police and district administration officials, the attacker detonated explosives at the main gate of Imambargah Khadijat-e-Kubra when security personnel attempted to stop him from entering the premises. The powerful explosion occurred while hundreds of people were gathered for Friday prayers, sending shockwaves through nearby residential areas and shattering windows of surrounding houses.
Rescue teams and law-enforcement agencies rushed to the scene immediately after the blast, shifting the injured and victims to hospitals across Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Emergency was declared at major hospitals, including PIMS, Polyclinic, and other federal facilities, with staff leave cancelled to handle the large number of casualties. Hospital authorities reported that dozens of injured were taken to PIMS, while others were distributed among Polyclinic, Federal General Hospital, and additional medical centres as capacity was exceeded.
Police sources said the attacker reportedly opened fire before detonating the explosive device at the gate, following an exchange with security personnel. Investigators have begun examining the nature of the blast and collecting evidence from the scene. The area has been sealed off as bomb disposal units and forensic teams continue their work.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack, describing the targeting of worshippers as a crime against humanity. Both leaders expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families, while directing authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured. The prime minister ordered a full investigation into the incident and called for those responsible to be swiftly identified and brought to justice.
Interior ministry officials and senior government representatives visited hospitals to check on the injured and review medical arrangements. Religious and political leaders also condemned the attack, calling it a tragic act of terrorism and urging stronger measures to protect citizens and places of worship.
Security has been tightened across the federal capital following the incident, with increased patrols and surveillance at sensitive locations. Authorities have assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to support the victims and prevent such attacks in the future.
