Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad for follow-up treatment of an ongoing eye condition, officials confirmed.
According to a statement issued by PIMS, the 74-year-old former premier was brought to the hospital on April 28 for a scheduled check-up. He underwent his fourth intravitreal anti-VEGF injection to treat right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), a condition diagnosed in late January 2026. Hospital officials reported that Khan remained clinically stable throughout the procedure.
Medical Details
Prior to the injection, ophthalmologists examined Imran Khan and performed an optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan, which showed clinical improvement in his condition. The procedure was carried out under microscopic guidance in the operation theatre, following all standard protocols and after obtaining informed consent.
Khan was discharged and returned to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi the same morning after the treatment. This marks the fourth such visit to PIMS for intravitreal injections since the diagnosis. Previous procedures were reported in January, February, and March 2026.
Background and Reactions
Imran Khan’s eye ailment gained significant attention earlier this year when his legal team informed the Supreme Court that he had suffered substantial vision loss in his right eye, reportedly retaining only around 15% vision at one point due to delayed treatment. The government and hospital authorities have consistently maintained that he is receiving appropriate medical care and remains stable.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan confirmed on social media that Imran Khan was taken to PIMS for the eye injection and medical check-up. The party has previously raised concerns about his health, calling for more transparent access and treatment by his personal physicians at a facility of his choice.
Information Minister and other government officials have described the transfers as routine medical visits conducted under strict security protocols, fulfilling legal and humanitarian requirements.
Ongoing Concerns
Khan has been in custody at Adiala Jail since August 2023, facing multiple legal cases. His supporters continue to demand better medical facilities and independent evaluations amid persistent reports of health issues. Hospital sources emphasize that his condition is being monitored regularly with follow-up care advised.
This latest medical update comes as political tensions remain high in the country, with PTI activists marking significant milestones in their campaign for his release.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more details emerge from official sources.
